Halloween: Stories In The Dark | Target Corporation | Released October 2017

Stories In The Dark is a modern twist on a classic Halloween collection. Featuring a retro inspired cast of quirky but time-honored characters, a tight color palette, and a variety of affordable products to choose from, it’s easy to layer items into your current decor, or create an entirely new look without breaking the bank. From bat candelabras, light-up signs and plush decor to bingo games, photo prop kits, and sticker sets, this assortment has everything you need to bring on the magic of the Halloween season!

The art for Stories in the Dark features traditional icons (such as jack-o-lanterns and skeletons) brought to life through unique shapes, poses, and facial expressions. The art is finished with a pencil-sketch texture to give it a hand-drawn and gritty feel.

This collection includes an enormous product line, from light-up signs to candy bowls, plush characters to outdoor lanterns. Metallic gold details add shine against matte-painted signs, LED lights extend daytime decor into night-time statements.

I developed an assortment of hand-lettered fonts that can be found on products including: craft kits, signage and even these apothecary labels!

Creating the right art ensures the set is both family friendly and slightly spooky. Bold oranges and blues made some parts of the collection brighter and sweeter, while other parts were mainly black, cream and metallic. Those sections could be made more sophisticated and paired with more adult-focused decor.

Patterns for Stories in the Dark were used on paper party supplies, printed on fabrics for soft decor, and found on stationery. Once again I developed a range from spooky to silly, character-focused to simple geometric to cover all Target’s needs.
