Poop or Get Off the Potty!
Henry Holt and Co. | Written by Margaret McNamara | Hardcover | 2019
When Mason and Mia were babies, they pooped a lot—always in their diapers. Now that they're big kids, it's time to use the potty. But what is the potty for? Naps? NO. Books? NO. Playing the drums? No, no, no! Mason and Mia look ahead to official big-kid territory in this hilarious, instructive story with special emphasis on that momentous toddler milestone: pooping in the potty!
When asked to illustrate Poop or Get Off the Potty!, the art director requested I use a similar style to a personal illustration I had posted on my Instagram account that celebrated diversity. With that in mind, I created a playful family made of up different shapes, hair styles, skin tones and more!
Mia and Mason are twins with their own training potties. They are always together in the book - even when they’re on their potties! I went with a split page coloration to give the sense of separation when doing their business and to play up the back-and-forth narrative between the siblings.
“Seated on their respective thrones...they successfully encourage each other to follow the titular injunction....[T]he book’s wholehearted embrace of its subject should make it welcome in many a toddler’s household.” (Kirkus, February 2019)
